I am sure you have probably asked yourself the question: “Can a video that explodes viraly get more than views? Is it possible to leverage the visibility of a great video to take your business where you never thought it could go, more quickly than you imagined possible?”
The answer is a resounding “Yes!” On today’s video, Our Top Video Discovery of 2009 proves it.
Every now and then, you run into a video that has it all:
1. Creative (or even groundbreaking) technique
2. Hugely entertaining
3. Generates tremendous buzz for its creators.
4. Showcases what the creator does best, and positions that talent in a positive, highly attractive manner to a receptive worldwide audience.
This video featured all 4 factors in abundance, and did it so well, its my Top Video Discovery of 2009:
.
.
Its the Michael Jackson Medley. And if I had a dime for every time I watched this thing, I could retire. It was created by a couple college kids, Kurt Hugo Schneider (creator of the brilliant arrangement and the beat boxer at the left side of the video) and Sam Tsui (pronounced Shoo-ee), the amazing singer.
In addition to being a creative tour-de-force, the video garnered all kinds of media attention and skyrocketed their profile and business prospects. Which is what we want our videos to do for us.
Why did the video succeed? Lets look at the four crucial factors:
Creative (or even groundbreaking) technique
While your videos don’t have to have this, in this case it was an enormous, attention grabber. The innovative video compositing, with 6 different versions of singing Sam all combined together, simply grab you and won’t let go. Once you realize ITS ALL THE SAME GUY, you can’t help but watch it again and again. And then tell your friends about it. Whether you loved Michael Jackson’s music or not.
Highly Entertaining
The amazing, layered a capella arrangement, the intricate harmonies, and the many familiar songs (after all, it is the Michael Jackson Medley) combine to do what all video is supposed to do: Create an amazing experience for the viewer. And when people have an amazing experience its a natural human inclination to tell others. This is what causes the viral effect that helps the video spread like wildfire.
Generates Tremendous Buzz for its Creators
The video soared to over 4 million views on YouTube alone in less than 8 months, pushed total views on all their videos to over 18 million, catapulted their YouTube subscriber base from a few thousand to over 85,000 subscribers, got them booked on a nationally televised talk show (The Bonnie Hunt Show), and secured something every musician, singer and business owner dreams about: a devoted worldwide fan base.
Showcasing What You Do Best
As business owners, isn’t that why people hire us? If your prospects can catch in full bloom, what makes you dynamic, special and one-of-a-kind, it elminates all doubt over whether you can deliver, doesn’t it? Demonstrating what you are fully capable of, diffuses objections and catapults demand for what you offer. In this video you get a great demo of the range of Sam’s amazing voice, and Kurt’s stunning arranging skills.
Wouldn’t it be powerful to be able to showcase your own strengths in a similarly undeniable way? And wouldn’t that do amazing things for your business?
Yes the Michael Jackson Medley is hugely entertaining. But that is only part of the reason I made this my #1 Video Discovery of 2009. The primary reason is that it, more than any other video I viewed during the year, showcases the power of online video to boost visibility, credibility and potential profitability. Even if no one knew about you before the video.
And isn’t that the best reason to create a video in the first place?

Holy s*i*t this is so cool. I’m awed by the talent of these two guys. I didn’t even realize it was one guy singing til half way through. The melodies and harmonies are captivating. Thanks for sharing this as I have obviously been living in a cave and this is my first viewing.
